Chimney Pond provides day hiking access to all Katahdin peaks and to Russell Pond Campground via Davis Pond and the Northwest Basin Trail.

Good Advice from Know Before You Go: If you stay in a lean-to, bunkhouse, or cabin, your gear needs will likely be centered on eating and sleeping. Each cabin is outfitted with 2-4 beds depending on which cabin you rent. Their camps attracted sports with an interest in fishing and hunting.

Russell Pond provides very good fishing in local ponds and access to Wassataquoik Stream, Wassataquoik Lake and several popular backcountry campsites.

Baxter State Park is a fantastic model of an independent park and reserve that many land managers here in Canada should be looking at.

You will need a sleeping bag or sheets, blankets and pillows.

As with cabin 1, you can drive up your car if the Ranger allows it. This is the only wheelchair accessible cabin in the campground. Bunkhouse reservations must be made by phone, mail*, or in person at BSP HQ in Millinocket.

However, the AT trail runs about 100 feet from the outhouse right behind the cabin. Please verify these cut-off times with the reservation office and make your plans accordingly.

Directions: One place to catch the trail up Sentinel is from the parking for the Kidney Pond cabins.

*Note that all campers must be at the gate by 8:30 pm on the first night of their camping reservation.*. I havent measured but cabin 1 & from the parking isnt more than 200m. Visitors can rent canoes from park rangers (you can track down a ranger at the Kidney Pond station) to explore the ponds and some of the little paths extending beyond them.

All the other cabins have to use the group fire pit.

However the crowds change noticeably once Labour Day Weekend, where families are back home to school and is replaced by an older crowd. Most of the campgrounds cabins line the northwest shoreline. First week of August is great as the bugs are mostly gone and not really an issue.

The unmaintained trail to Little Beaver Pond (there were blowdowns when we walked it), is just beyond Celia Pond, and is marked with a park sign.

So, for the last few years, Ive been making the journey to Baxter to enjoy the wilderness. Some of the other sites that will require reservation either by phone, mail or in person during the month of May due to park slowly opening up or allowing for traffic on the soft dirt roads: Once you have your dates and site figured out, your best bet at success is to take a chance with the online reservation system. Personally I think Kidney Pond works better for families with children as it is more open and the lake is more accessible as opposed to Daicey where you have rocks & roots everywhere and the lake isnt used as much.

Baxter State Park has no potable water but what they do have is an abundance of water sources and minimal industrial pollution.

The main downside is that the picnic table & fire ring is surrounded by boulders so its doesnt accommodate that many unless you can find a flat spot for your camp chair. Cabin 5 The Landing (wheel chair accessible).

Russell Pond and Chimney Pond campgrounds offer hike-in and backcountry camping in wild settings.

Generally the maximum group size for campgrounds and trails in the Park is 12 persons. We didnt have to go far for a great camping experience.

One of the most popular walks is the hike to Sentinel Mountain. Kidney Pond Cabins has 12 total sites.

Then youll arrive at the smallest and sweetest of little gravel beaches.

You will be sharing an accessible outhouse from the parking lot and there is a double outhouse about 50m towards the open field and communal fire pit.

Along with Cabin #5, these would be the ones where youd get the most foot traffic as they along the trails to the other cabins. There are no trash cans, no running water, no waste water drains, no electricity, no cell phone coverage and no showers.

The Ranger is on duty usually until 9:30pm and if you miss him/her, they will stop by your site to check-in.

The next four cabins are located directly from the parking lot, so you can can un/load from your parking spot or drive up to the edge. You cannot see the cabins from the ranger station or the library. Slaughter Pond My favorite of the many small, remote ponds sprinkled around Kidney Pond. If you are confident in your fitness and abilities take your group along any of around ten trails leading up the mountain and back again. There is also a wood stove table and chairs. Please do not modify the structure in any way (nails, hooks, etc.).
